We have been blessed this fall with very temperate weather. But with the holidays and the solstice around the corner we are looking at a higher chance of freezing temps! We all need reminders now and then so we wanted to pass on some tips to protect your home or investment properties from possible damage that can come with dropping temperatures.
Protect your pipes:
Disconnect your outdoor hoses from the faucet, and cover the water faucet with a foam insulator.
Turn off the sprinkler systems and drain them
Insulate water pipes in the unheated areas like your attic and accessible crawl spaces.
Open the cabinets of any indoor sinks that are on an exterior wall and clear item around the pipes to allow the air flow around them.
Turn the faucet on to a very slow drip to keep the water moving to avoid freezing.
Check your Heat:
Make sure your gas and electric services are turned on to vacant spaces
Make sure your fireplaces are cleaned and ready for use.
Clear gutters from the fallen leaves and debris that can build up which can keep rain snow and ice from draining off properly. When ice and snow build up on the roof they can cause roof leaks.
Keep a bag of ice melt and a snow shovel handy to help prevent sliping and falling on icy and snow covered sidewalks.
Stock up on the essentials for an emergency event like a power outage or being snowed in. Food, blankets, flashlights and water are always important to keep on hand in case of any emergency event.
We hope these winter weather tips and precautions will keep your family safe and warm. From all of us at LaGree Associates we wish you a safe and Happy Holiday Season.
